The problem with geriatric leaders in power is not just one of cognitive decline. It’s also that the mental models that made them successful some 20–30 years ago are outdated. They are experts in a world that no longer exists. One example is invading your neighbors in the hope of restoring the bygone glory of the former Soviet empire; only to find out that the once-meek neighbor’s army actually kept up with modernization, while yours just paper-tigered itself through complacency and corruption. The mistake can be explained if you were a 1980s KGB officer that successfully rose to power through force and intrigue. Another is using the door-in-the-face technique of starting a negotiation with an extreme move, such as applying trade-halting punitive tariffs, in the hope of getting a more moderate request through later. That may have worked in the 1980s New York real estate market, but it no longer does in a modern world whose highly-interconnected global supply chain has become a defining hyperobject.
