The canonical historical precedent is Thomas Becket, Archbishop of Canterbury, getting murdered in 1170 by four knights who took as a royal command this utterance in passing by Henry II, King of England: "What miserable drones and traitors have I nourished and brought up in my household, who let their lord be treated with such shameful contempt by a low-born cleric?". Henry II was reportedly horrified by the gruesome killing and later regretted his words.
