I’m going to stay. The outreach changed my mind. I don’t see the outreach as evidence of correctness, but instead as evidence that the insights i occasionally have may be valuable to others in building their own perspectives. I’ve seen every cycle of grift in crypto from inception, the playbook continues to get more sophisticated and the lines will continue to blur. To me, Coinbase is the enemy, they always have been. Not because they exist, but because they treat customers like dogshit, they don’t care about usability, if they did then why does everything they have suck so much, and they actively undermine the goals and intents of the tech, specifically in the domain of Trust. What will begin to change is my way of engaging here as I no longer have trust that Dan and his leadership are separate from the CB machine. I will post how my engagement is changing as it does, the tools I produce to get what I’m after I will open source. This will be a process but so it goes.

Eventually, all CEXes (and the trust assumptions that come with them) are nothing more than a necessary evil on the way to adoption. The on/off ramp function alternatives are scarce. The exchange/trading function has DeFi alternatives but remains appealing to normies who haven’t yet interacted to smart contracts. So I think it’s healthy to remain skeptical and keep CEXes at arms-length, whether it’s Coinbase or any other. I still use them as a public bathroom — log in, do my business, and leave. Not that they are necessarily ill-intentioned, but that we shouldn’t have to rely on their perceived intentions in the first place. That’s what cryptography is meant to avoid in the first place. After all is said, I’m glad you chose to remain onboard. We need that healthy tension between the for-profit corporates building and the skeptics who remind us that crypto isn’t all kumbaya.
