The Economist with a cool (ha) article on innovation in air conditioning. TL;DR: - Avg temperature already up 1.2°C from pre-industrial baseline, on track to +2°C by mid-century. - AC units to triple by mid-century. - Evidence exists for heat-related mortality avoidance thanks to AC. - AC contributes more CO2 emissions than the airline industry. - Cooling becomes *more* energy intensive per ° as air temperature rises. - Decarbonizing electricity would help, but AC lifespan is typically 20 years, so the energy efficiency of units sold today will impact emissions through mid-century. - AC design currently does two things: cool the air and remove the condensed humidity from around the coils to avoid damage. - Research shows at least 40% improved efficiency by separating those two functions: push humid air through a lattice or membrane that captures water first, then cool the air. https://www.economist.com/science-and-technology/2024/09/04/new-tech-can-make-air-conditioning-less-harmful-to-the-planet

If I’m getting this right, Thoman ACs do more harm than good?

Individually no, but collectively yes. Most people who need AC don’t have it, and yet they subsidize those who do (by paying indirectly for climate externalities, i.e., the local impacts of global warming from GHG emissions)

Okay i think im getting it But by "indirectly paying for climate externalities"? Are you referring to the increased costs of healthcare, infrastructure, and other services related to climate change?

Yes, plus local droughts, extreme weather events, job loss, water shortages, diseases, etc. Essentially all the first and second order impacts of climate change. The GHG emissions are disproportionately caused by a few (top five countries out of ~200 account for ~50% of emissions) but the costs are borne by everyone

Really crazy that a small group of countries is responsible for such a large proportion of emissions with the impacts of climate change felt globally lol And what about the idea of "polluter pays" ……. do you think there's a case for making those who contribute most to emissions take on more responsibility for addressing the problems they're causing or nah

Truth is, I was early and benefitted from auto follows for a while I’m not that interesting — I tend to cast about niche stuff

Oh I totally forgot about auto follows I’m a physiotherapist and i decided that’s what I’ll be posting about on here most times but idk. Been thinking of ways to up my game and get a wider reach.. I’ve been consistent tho

Do you need a wider reach? And if not, why do you want one? Most people who engage with my casts are consistently the same ~100 or so folks — familiar faces to me by now. The rest of my followers don’t care enough about my casts to engage, or are bots, or have left the platform. My follower count number is somewhat misleading in that regard. My most popular casts reach about 1K views, which is about 0.9% of my supposed audience. Also, I never intended to grow an audience on Farcaster. My day job is enough that I don’t need a side hustle. I just cast about what I enjoy; the high follower count was a lucky instance of being in the right place at the right time. If I tried to cast about what I think attracts most eyeballs instead, I’d burn out pretty quickly and churn, because it would feel like a second job (and a poorly paid one at that)

Yeah i do need a wider reach cus i believe im trying to do something I want to create physical health awareness and maybe someday, when im at that level, help people through it(bigger picture) But for now, i just have to grow first Im opening a channel today for people to be more open about their physical health(progress, shortcomings and so on) and I’ll be starting this week as a ‘gratitude week’ Yesterday was world physiotherapy day and i want people to come share and be thankful fortheir experiences with their health in general, not just physical therapy alone cus that’s the point of the channel And i totally get you haha If i had 100 people that were doing the same for me, oh how I’ll be glad lol

I’ve been deep in crypto for over a decade (first Bitcoin, then Ethereum), just not professionally. My PFP is from an early Reddit community of Ethereum maxis

I was very interested in cryptography in the mid 90s (when the US banned PGP for a while), and then into P2P in the late 90s (Napster, Kazaa, etc), and finally in databases (professionally) in the early 00s. So when Bitcoin came along, I saw that it was cryptography + P2P + database (ledger), so it clicked for me. The cypherpunk aspect appealed to me then

A good reference point is @cdixon.eth’s recent book Read, Write, Own which goes over some of the history and prospects of crypto (the computer, not the casino, as he calls it). I recommend it
