“This picture is a great example of the concept of “revealed vs. stated preference.” The “stated preference” is expressed by the sign, which asks people to use the paved path. It represents what the planners or authorities intended for people to do. However, the “revealed preference” is visible in the dirt path worn into the grass, showing the route people actually take, despite the paved alternative. This dirt path reveals the genuine preference or behavior of the people using the area, which may prioritize convenience or a more direct route over following the intended path. This concept is often used in economics and urban planning to show the difference between what people say or are told they should do versus what they actually do when making choices.” (Chat GPT) TIL that there’s a name for these — “desire paths” or “elephant paths” which I find quite poetic

I’ve never been sure what to make of these paths… I like clean design of planned sidewalks but OTOH it also seems like a kind of bad UI if people are making their own paths. University campuses have these all over the place.

Could you ask ChatGPT is Japan is the most reliable country to use the stated preference? I mean can’t imagine Japanese people use the revealed preference in any circumstance. Curiosity

We call them desire lines or goat tracks at work. Good demonstration of soil compaction inhibiting plant growth.
