A pearl is one of the most beautiful and valuable gemstones, naturally formed inside marine oysters and mollusks. It develops when an irritant, such as a grain of sand or another foreign particle, enters the mollusk’s shell. To protect itself, the mollusk secretes layers of nacre (a substance made of calcium carbonate), which gradually builds up around the irritant, eventually forming a pearl.
