Just found out about a new (major!) hack of SSNs in the US.

As a European, it's astonishing how much power the Social Security Number holds over American lives. Unlike our national ID numbers, which have limited use, the SSN is a gateway to so many aspects of life in the US—banking, credit, healthcare. 

Which would be fine, if it wasn’t so easy to be misused for impersonating someone else!
I get that it’s hard to change system, but I cannot fathom the fact that the most tech advanced nation in the world is not even trying to mitigate such a huge security issue. It’s like having a single unchangeable password for your entire life!

Is there something I am not aware of?
