Bitcoin developers have revealed details of a high-severity software bug affecting over 13% of home and business computers worldwide that enforce Bitcoin’s rules. The vulnerability, identified as CVE-2024-35202, allows for a remote shutdown of Bitcoin nodes running Core software versions earlier than 25.0. Attackers can remotely exploit a flaw in the software's handling of block transaction messages. Niklas Gögge is credited with discovering and disclosing the bug, as well as providing the patch implemented in Bitcoin Core v25.0.
