American math education has changed, 2-digit by 2-digit multiplication. 66 x 22 step 1: write 66 x 2 as 122 with a little 1 over the middle 2 step 2: write 66 x 20 as 1,220 with a little 1 over the first 2 step 3: write final answer as 1,452 by adding up the columns

I was taught to write the first intermediate step: 66 x 2 as 132, by going right to left and keeping intermediate values in my head. Seeing the 122 written down on paper triggered me. It's not wrong though, especially since: a) always go left to right, b) intermediate calcs are disposable, c) less storage mistakes

I learned right to left starting with 1s and then progressing. Less steps slightly worse mental math, never needed anything different 66 x 22 132 +1320 1452
