true science lets us make hypotheses, and disprove them. pseudo-science makes claims only, and people get to argue over them. math lets us distinguish, if a question gets the same answer in all paths, the technique used is valid, and even universally true.

"crypto" (blockchain technology) is a tool. it can be used truthfully to do real math ("no more accountants! no more lawyers! no more central authority necessary to determine consensus!"). Or as a marketing strategy to achieve other goals. Or something in between.

A big tent ("web3 for normies! consumer crypto! onboarding the next billion!") requires acceptance of a range of crypto use cases. Purity tests are not useful. An open question though. What kinds of compromises are necessary to achieve a goal, and if doing so destroys its original value proposition, does the idea evolve. For example, if blockchain technology goes mainstream to serve the world with fast, cheap, global value transfers, must we allow central authorities to make stablecoin transfers censorable/ stoppable/ reversible/ non-final?
