The history of the pug breed: from Chinese emperors to royal courts
Pugs are one of the most recognizable and beloved dog breeds in the world. Their adorable wrinkles, short legs and playful nature have won the hearts of millions of people. But few people know that the history of this breed goes back to ancient times and is linked to the mysterious China.

Chinese roots
Origin: Most scientists agree that the ancestors of Pugs, similar to Pekingese, were bred in China more than 3,000 years ago. These dogs were a symbol of wealth and luxury and were kept exclusively by emperors and nobles. There were “Ha Pa” and “Lo Jie” dogs in China, which are considered to be the direct ancestors of modern pugs.

Significance: The Chinese attached special importance to the appearance of pugs. The creases on their foreheads were considered sacred and associated with characters. That's why these features were specially fixed in the breed during selection.
