What should it be? 

My criteria - fiction, engrossing, philosophical (by which I mean concerned about how to live well), well written.

All the Light We Cannot See (Anthony Doerr)
The Luminaries (Eleanor Catton)

For something different 

Piranesi (Susanna Clarke)
Daemon (Daniel Suarez)

I absolutely unreservedly recommend all of them except 

All the Light … which I thought was over-rated but which is almost universally loved 

and 

Daemon … which is much closer to Michael Crichton level “philosophy” with guns and violence, but is still a ton of fun 

Piranesi is short and exceptional. I loved.
