journal entries are physical reminders of how far you've come, which is often forgotten/overlooked they really do make your tough days a little bit better in my entries, most account of events were documented with heightened emotions.

they say "don't trust your emotions", but to me, those are almost accurate indicators of something buried, unseen. by writing down those thoughts weaved with intense feelings, i have a guilt free outlet (as supposed to another human) to release my pent up frustration, and leave a trace for myself to analyze later (if i feel the need to).

when you're journaling, you're connecting the dots between your past, present, and future self. it's so easy to get caught up with everything around us and lose that sense of centerness, and by having a point of reference, it's a bit easier to find your way back there are so many different techniques out there (morning pages, future self journaling, etc), but whatever helps you process in the most effortless way works best and helps you stay consistent.
