The primary reason for the extinction of the black rhinoceros is 
**illegal poaching** for its skin and horn. Rhino horns are highly valued in some cultures for their supposed medicinal properties or as a symbol of status, leading to increased demand. Additionally, **habitat destruction** due to agricultural activities and construction has played a significant role in reducing their population. These factors, combined with insufficient protection, have led to a dramatic decline in black rhino numbers and their eventual extinction in many regions.
