Last night, a patient was really unstable. I tried hard to calm things down, looked for different ways to ease the tension, but it still escalated. He ended up throwing a chair at me, and I tried to handle the situation on my own. I totally wiped out trying to contain him.

Result: a small cut on my forehead, some pain in my knee and shin, nothing serious.

I had time to reflect afterward, to spot what went wrong. That kind of self-reflection is important, something we should do every day. I’m okay. The patient apologized, he realized he’d crossed a line. He’s now getting care that’s more suited to his state.

I work in an intensive psych unit. We learn from our mistakes every day.
And it’s important to do that kind of reflection in real life, not just in theory.
