this is pretty bad UX. any idea if theres intentions to improve this and not require you to DM a channel's admin?

There is, that’s what fan tokens are for like we have for /cattown.  I don’t think they’ve implemented a moderation strategy for /base-builds yet.

Members can now invite their friends to /base-builds, and earn referral rewards if they participate in a round
