It also could just be that he is a stand in for Tanya, i.e. the white knight who will help her dreams come true. 

I could just as easily see him be the one to die in the firefight, taking her dream away again, similar to when Tanya ditched her for Greg. 

This may be her fate/pattern, as the show likes to show how the rich always end up ok and how the working class cannot escape being working class
