My camera led me deeper into the lives of the Tenggerese, a community whose unwavering beliefs and traditions have remained intact since the medieval era of the Majapahit Kingdom. In the 21st century, nothing has changed—they continue to uphold their ancient rituals, preserving a spiritual connection with their sacred land. Witnessing their devotion made me realise how deeply their faith intertwines with their way of life.

The Tenggerese, or Tengger people, are one of Indonesia’s indigenous tribes. They have settled around Mount Bromo, across the regions of Pasuruan, Lumajang, Probolinggo, and Malang Regency. They are believed to be descendants of Majapahit royalty, carrying forward a lineage that has stood the test of time.

One of the most significant festivals for the Tenggerese is Yadnya Kasada, which lasts about a month, typically in June-July. During this festival, on the 14th day, the Tenggerese make a pilgrimage to Luhur Poten Bromo to offer prayers to Hyang Widi Wasa and Mahadeva, the Gods of the Mountain. The offerings include rice, fruits, vegetables, flowers, livestock, and other local goods. In addition to the offerings, the Dukun (medicine men) undergo a test of memory and spiritual strength, where they are challenged to recall prayers. The Dukun who succeeds is chosen as the spiritual leader of the Tengger tribe, guiding them through their rituals and maintaining their connection with the divine. ©️Anil T Prabhakar
