Tonight, a patient told me that he was the creator of the universe, the almighty God, and that he had powers. We talked for a bit, i tried to bring some reality into the conversation, then I lit his cigarette.

He quickly grabbed my lighter and tried to burn his arm to show me that he couldn’t feel the fire. I managed to take the lighter back just in time. He smiled at me, locked eyes, and told me I was a king.

He paused for a few seconds, lowered his head, then looked straight into my eyes again and said, “You are the king of peace.” ✌️

I loved his smiling, relaxed gaze. It’s true that I enjoy my interactions with this patient, there’s no distance between us, just two people talking sincerely.

It’s always tricky because, as a caregiver, you can’t indulge a patient’s delusion, but you also shouldn’t outright deny it. My approach is to gently bring things back to reality with authenticity, it works pretty well.

That said, he’s still not sleeping… and it’s 3 AM. 😬

Love hearing that! Helps him to have someone available for sincere conversations. I'm sure he can have a hard time finding this taking into account he thinks he's God. Most people might be thrown off when they hear that.
