I've been seeing a lot takes like this. Summary: Tech makes creation cheaper but attention is zero-sum, which incentivizes less risk taking. There is no shortage of great music, but it is more difficult for it to break through. Same seems true of all art & information. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1bZ0OSEViyo

It's true that today it's too easy for everyone to make music, and this has led to an oversaturated market. Regarding streaming services and their easy access to music, many people are happy with them even though the sound quality is often lossy AAC (both through streaming and Bluetooth headphones/speakers). There are other reasons why music is getting worse, and it started before the streaming era, when people were still buying records. For example, the loudness war has contributed to this decline and unfortunately has not been solved by normalization. The first digital brick-wall limiter, Waves L1, introduced in the mid-1990s, has certainly pushed toward the modern sound. In recent years, clipper plugins have gained popularity along with saturation plugins. The need to follow market trends and adapt loudness to meet client requests and accommodate poor performance devices is closing the circle.
