A pink aurora occurs when the Northern Lights (aurora borealis) appear in shades of pink, red, and purple. This phenomenon usually happens when solar particles collide with nitrogen atoms in Earth's atmosphere, creating these rare and beautiful colors. While the common colors of the aurora are green and blue, a pink aurora occurs at lower altitudes due to the lower oxygen concentration and the predominance of nitrogen.
