genuine question: how did U2 become like the biggest band in the world (iTunes releases, Sphere residency, etc) when i (and a lot of people i ask) can’t really name more than two songs?

A string of perfect records from War thru Achtung Baby helped in the 80’s thru the 90’s. They were on Alternative Radio alongside R.E.M. and then Mainstream pretty quickly around the time of Joshua Tree. On that tour they filmed a rockumentary live album called Rattle & Hum. They then took a complete left turn with Achtung Baby and took from my boys in Nine Inch Nails, Ministry and Jesus and Mary Chain and made an early industrial record (and IMO their best). This is still 1991. 

Like any band, they needed to make records to tour to make records to tour so they had plenty of both in the years later and since. 

By the time 2014 rolled around (iTunes album time) they were already cultural lexicons.
