India and Pakistan share a tense history of conflict, primarily over the state of **Kashmir**, since they both came into power as independent nations after British rule in 1947. They have fought **four significant wars**: - **1947-1948 (First War)**: Pakistani-supported forces invaded Kashmir. India defended itself, and it ended on a ceasefire that was mediated by the **United Nations**, with the formation of the **Line of Control (LoC)**. - **1965 (Second War)**: Pakistan initiated **Operation Gibraltar** to incite rebellion in Indian-held Kashmir. The war intensified into all-out conflict but resulted in a **ceasefire** through Soviet-sponsored talks. - **1971 (Third War)**: It was a unique warโit was not waged on Kashmir but saw the **establishment of Bangladesh**. India supported the movement for independence in East Pakistan, and Pakistan was defeated and surrendered.
