My practical assignment for the photography school where I have been studying for the past four months is themed Corporeality. The heroine of this shoot is my roommate and fellow humanitarian visa holder from Russia, like myself. A few years ago, she had a rib removed and used to reconstruct a vertebra after breaking her spine when she jumped out of a window during a psychotic episode. My description: "And the Creator fashioned the female body as a vessel of life to bring forth the light of new creation into the world. Yet this vessel is fragile, for its fragility preserves sanctity. In its strength lies life, and in its fragility β€” a lesson of humility and the delicacy of the world." "Matyushka" β€” the inscription on the tattoo. This word is untranslatable into English but roughly means "mama" with a warm and affectionate tone.
