A runaway thought: 
The metaverse is here already; it’s just social media. People spend hundreds of dollars on their ‘metaverse’ self when they post photos of their outfits and accessories online.

That online ‘self’ asynchronously interacts with other people’s live selves when they look at your posts and make character assessments based on what they see. 

The biggest non-recursive reason why the digital metaverse hasn’t taken off is cost to entry and the “uncanny valley” (which is a little recursive but I digress). It’s technically cheaper to buy or rent an expensive (looking) outfit that you can keep on IG as a catalogue of your aesthetic than to purchase something with the headspace of a Fortnite skin, as if you only bought this for the hype and you will eventually amortize the cost of the outfit to 0 once the next drop occurs*

* yeah I know hypebeasts do this but most people aren’t hypebeasts
