In December 2024, Google released two major updates in search rankings and site traffic: the core update and the anti-spam update.

Kernel update December 2024

Time frame and effects: This update was rolled out between December 12th to December 18th. It is the fastest rolling kernel update; it took just six days, making this one of the fastest to roll out. Observed volatility: The main update resulted in more volatility from the viewpoint of data providers than the one in November 2024. Nevertheless, it was less impactful than during the updates of August and March. There is extreme swing in the rankings from search especially in the domains of health and finance. Publisher feedbacks: Several of the publishers give out hints that the sites have regained their lost traffic due to the updates. According to reports, such dead affiliate sites are getting back to life and therefore reversing rank penalties.
