The name "octopus" often evokes feelings of fear and disgust. Their appearance and gaze can seem terrifying. However, what many of us might not know is that, in the animal kingdom, octopuses are among the most self-sacrificing creatures when it comes to their offspring.
After laying thousands of eggs, the mother octopus guards them relentlessly. She doesn’t leave her spot, nor does she eat. She continues to protect the eggs until they hatch.
An octopus can survive without food for a maximum of six months, which, interestingly, is also the time it takes for the eggs to hatch. Once the eggs hatch, the mother octopus becomes so weak from starvation that she lacks the energy even to move and eventually dies.
The baby octopuses are left orphaned, as the mother who gave birth to them dies before they can truly understand or remember her. Nature is filled with many such incredible and heart-wrenching stories that leave us amazed. 1 reply
