Pakistan is aiming to implement a China-style national firewall around its internet. The move comes partly in response to my own reporting over the last year at The Intercept and Drop Site News which military junta chief Asim Munir called “digital terrorism” in a speech this week. The firewall is currently going up and is causing huge disturbances to the IT sector, as well as millions of ordinary people who rely on the internet to work and run their businesses, including as contractors for global firms. Of course, Pakistan is not a world unto itself like China and can never really sever itself from the global internet entirely. But the military is trying to control the narrative after hemorrhaging popularity over the last year due to its standoff with imprisoned former PM Imran Khan, as well as leaks and reporting done by myself and my colleagues.
