Merry Christmas, happy solstice, joyful Hanukkah. Thinking of colleagues and friends living in Mayotte, Palestine, Israel, Sudan, Afghanistan, Iran, Haiti, and Ukraine who are enduring conflict and difficult time. You are not forgotten, we will continue to support you. ✊🏼

The ⁦‪DailyMail‬⁩ published an article on the progress of the Unistellar network of citizen scientists in planetary defense. There is a bit of hype but it includes also a great summary of my past, present and future work. https://apple.news/AdEW8pVyCQOqWA32N97wYyQ

An explanation on what’s happening in New Jersey: at least people are looking up again and noticing the many bright, human-made objects in the sky. Maybe it’s time to invest in a telescope, step outside, and rediscover the wonders of the night sky.

Did you know? At our HQ in San Francisco, we’re building the SETI Institute’s LaserSETI stations—one instrument at a time. One day, a few received photon could change everything. #seti

Had a blast at Nerd Nite in Vancouver, BC, sharing 40 years of SETI research—focusing on the future with AI and exoplanet direct imaging. The room was packed, the energy was amazing, and the spirit was inspiring. Thank you, Vancouver, for having us!

Not everything you disagree with should be called « woke » to get the attention of the people.

Congratulations to the brilliant USC students for setting a new record in amateur spaceflight! Their rocket, Aftershock II, soared to an incredible 470,000 feet (90 miles), smashing the previous record by 80,000 feet. The sky is no longer the limit! #Innovation #SpaceExploration https://laist.com/news/los-angeles-activities/usc-student-team-breaks-record-for-highest-amateur-space-launch

Bidding farewell to this comet. As it drifts farther from us and the Sun, its brilliance fades—but the memory of its splendor remains. #cometA3

Just returned from Anguilla—an island brimming with smiles, warmth, clear skies, and a curious, inspiring youth. The world’s future is bright; sometimes, we just need to look around. #anguilla #traveling #astronomy

Astronomy meets Veterans Day: Arizona’s Anthem Veterans Memorial honors U.S. Armed Forces. Each November 11, at 11:11 am MST, the sun aligns to illuminate the Great Seal, symbolizing their sacrifice—a powerful tribute to those who fought for our freedom. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anthem_Veterans_Memorial

Observers around the world caught sight of Comet C/2023 A3 (Tsuchinan-Atlas), a visitor from the distant Oort Cloud. Discovered just last year, it raised hopes for a naked-eye appearance in 2024—and it didn’t disappoint! #CometA3 https://www.seti.org/comet-c2023-a3-did-not-disappoint

Last night in Anguilla, I captured my best shot yet of the Orion Nebula while chatting with the amazing visitors and staff at the Malliouhana hotel about space. It was inspiring and made me proud to have contributed to creating this @Unistellar telescope. Bringing back the wonders of space—and, more importantly, joy.

Expanding the @SETIInstitute Citizen Science Network to share the wonders of the dark sky & support local space initiatives is our mission. Recently, my colleague Ryan Lambert visited Rwanda for #SpaceWeek with @Unistellar telescopes to inspire. Big thanks to @TRLspace for involving us in this project! We’re excited to help observe Rwanda’s first satellite & spark youth passion for space. #Rwanda #CitizenScience https://www.seti.org/exploring-stars-rwanda-astronomers-journey-international-space-week

I voted yesterday—for the mayor of San Francisco, a range of important city and state propositions, and the school district. I’m grateful to live in a democratic system where we’re consulted on meaningful, necessary changes. For president, I voted for Kamala Harris because I believe in this country’s future and oppose those who try to divide us with hate. You should too. 🇺🇸

Last night, Comet C/2023 A3 put on an incredible show from San Francisco. As it is higher in the sky and further away from the sun, the images keep getting better with my @unistellar Odyssey telescope #astronomy #cometA3

A year after Europe’s Mars orbiter played alien by sending an extraterrestrial message to Earth, a brilliant father-daughter duo decoded the signal from @asigninspace! This project pushes the limits of SETI protocols and showcases the power of Citizen Science. 👽 #ASignInSpace #SETI #CitizenScience #Space https://blogs.esa.int/to-mars-and-back/2024/10/23/father-daughter-team-decodes-alien-signal/

When a high-profile figure finally says what the US space industry has known for years, it could spark much-needed change. The NASA Artemis program—years behind schedule and billions over budget—should have taxpayers and leaders demanding accountability. https://www.bloomberg.com/opinion/articles/2024-10-17/michael-bloomberg-nasa-s-artemis-moon-mission-is-a-colossal-waste
