This bite is hilarious. Or scary as hell, I dont know. Vivek & Kirk basically believe free speech is more important than enforcing truth, and they even consider the later as "one of the scariest thing they've heard". They're completely confused between scientific dialectic, which is healthy and is happening between experts, and people having opinions, which in their views, are as valuable as expert's opinions. Like, what the actual fuck?? This is so demagogic. I mean, they have a point with "who decides misinformation?", but their logical conclusion, which is basically "there's no truth, everybody can have opinions and we have to respect that" is completely flawed. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7GiRvY2uSz0

Freedom of speech is freedom to transact. If you don't understand that then crypto must be a mind fuck

Freedom of speech fundamentally relies upon one's own ability to discern truth To imply this should be controlled by an entity is absolutely ridiculous and goes against what crypto was originally created to stand against The comparison would be *only* trusting your wallet provider to check for honeypots or scams

Do you believe that for some matters, truth exist? Like, 1+1=2. (This is a serious question btw, there are some people who believe it doesn't have fundamental existence.)

Ok. So for climate for example, which I believe is a science and based on math, who gets to decide what's true and what's not? I'm assuming here that we *need* to decide, just because as a society, we need consensus. We need to believe in a shared reality in order to push in the same direction, otherwise we're doomed.

Completely agree, I think that's one of the many topics that requires more open debate enabled by free speech.. if people could vote for their preferred research by funding what they believe to be true it could get interesting This to me ties freedom of speech and freedom to transact. People need to be able to say dumb stuff out in the open or they end up in an echo chamber I guess desci would help solve this but it's probably a few more years away

I think that's where the fundamental mistake is though. Truth doesn't care about what the majority believe. Before Galileo came to be, the majority believed the sun was revolving around the earth. Free speech and open debate among experts and scientific, yes, that's what happening already and that's how science works in general (peer reviews for ex.). Free speech to give the same value to an expert's opinion, and a random person's opinion, no.

Who assigns that value and gets to decide what the true value is? If people want to believe in flat Earth they should be able to, once enough research and proof is given to people they can change their minds and should be able to on their own accord. Same with if people want to fund that, it would be funny because interest in disproving the Earth is flat would be much lower and instead derivatives like memecoins or prediction markets would rise But if we start to take away free discussion and we'd never see that.. people would go on believing the Earth is flat, trust in institutions already isn't trending well. Controlling speech would just add fuel to the fire
