I have a friend (let’s call him Milo because that’s his name) who used to be quite a known entertainment journalist back at home. In 2022, he escaped the war and persecution as a gay man and moved to NYC. I’m not gonna share his full story here (he’ll do it way better himself anyway) but now he’s working as a barista at Atelier Jolie. This establishment is supporting refugee chefs and other staff from all walks of life. Check out their Cafe Offbeat too - it’s a cool concept and you’ll be helping people starting their lives basically from scratch. Milo has gone through some culinary training and workshops before getting this gig at the Atelier. To my knowledge, the training program was free - kudos to the great city of New York I paid Milo a quick visit while I was at Farcon - the coffee shop is awesome and located in Basquiat’s building (!!!)). If you’re in the neighborhood, stop by for a coffee and tell Milo Alina Ferry sent you. He loves meeting friends of friends
