What was the origin of modern painting?

 To understand how "modern painting" began, a little historical background will be helpful.  The 19th century was a time of significant and rapidly increasing change.  As a result of the Industrial Revolution (1860-1760) there were huge changes in production, transportation and technology that affected all of Europe and America.  Cities flourished because of people who left their homelands to fill urban factories.  These industrially inspired social changes led to greater prosperity, but living conditions became harsh and oppressive for most workers.  This in turn led to a greater demand for urban architecture and a greater demand for applied arts and design – for example, the Bauhaus school – and the rise of a new class of wealthy entrepreneurs who became art collectors and patrons.  Many of the world's best art museums were founded by these 19th century capitalists
