Bitrace reports a rise in phishing scams using fake Twitter accounts during the airdrop season, posing significant risks to Web3 users. Criminals create highly imitated accounts of official crypto projects, post false airdrop claim links, and lure users into granting wallet access. Victims lose funds, as seen in one case involving 136.2 ETH stolen through a fake Etherfi link. Phishing operations are industrialized, involving the purchase of verified Twitter accounts, mimicking official profiles, and deploying bots to boost fake links in official comment sections. Payment for these accounts and related services often occurs in crypto, connecting to high-risk activities like money laundering. Bitrace identifies phishing addresses linked to the “Inferno Drainer” group and warns users to verify account authenticity and avoid suspicious links. Social platforms must enhance safeguards to combat this organized and large-scale threat to user funds.
