The first 5 megabyte computer disc weighing half a tonne Loading the first hard drive into a Pan American aircraft, 1965.The world's first IBM hard drive, model 305 RAMAC, weighed a ton and consisted of aluminium plates on a reel (pictured). By 1965, miniature 500kg discs appeared. They had a memory of 5 megabytes. Our phone today is hundreds, thousands of such discs. What progress has been made!
