Cats became domesticated by humans around 9,000 years ago, when humans began farming and collecting grain. 
During this time, rats and other animals began to invade the crops, which in turn led to cats hunting these animals, and humans kept cats around to protect them from rats and other pests. Cats belong to the "Felidae" family, which also includes lions, leopards, and tigers.
