Public Service Announcement! Recast for a tip! It's a tragedy that when people hear the concept "human needs" they think of Maslow's hierarchy of "needs" Because although Maslow's work was crucial for the development of the concept and study of human needs, his framework wasn't about needs but desires Maslow's work was focused on what people strive for, not what people absolutely require to be healthy. This is a radical difference. In Maslow's framework, if somebody doesn't have their social needs fulfilled, it just results in the person striving for them to be fulfilled, when in reality if someone's social needs aren't met, they will develop pathologies, either psychological or physical disease This means that people can't just 'toughen up" and "get over it" if their emotional needs aren't being met Nobody can do that. Sure people can survive without their social needs met, but never be healthy. Maybe they can get by, but we cannot rely on them as being capable of being responsible for themselves or others.
