People initially used stone, wood and bone, but around 4000 BC, the first metal tool was made of copper. Copper provided sharper tools due to its greater hardness than stone. Then, with a combination of copper and tin, bronze was created, which helped build large buildings, but the tin was rare and bronze was expensive. About 1500 BC, iron was discovered, which was a more common material and made tools and weapons cheaper. Wood was needed to turn iron ore into coal, but Abraham Darby discovered the use of coal in the eighteenth century, which led to the Industrial Revolution.
