I was thinking about reading it next. After reading your first impressions, I’ll probably deprioritise it in favour of something else

It's not a must, but it will be difficult to get anything out of it if you know close to nothing. The conversation will happen in your own language and that's it. It helps a lot with practicing, but the other person is not a teacher.

I like sketching buildings and ruins. The problem is that I'm really slow and never get to finish them.

Using apps that pair you with native speakers trying to learn your native language has helped me a lot.

I’ve just finished “Read Write Own”, which I started reading mainly because of how many mentions it had here. Great book. It reminded me why I fell in love with the internet long ago and why that passion has mostly died lately. It also inspired me to try to go back to building cool stuff again.

Yes, as long as it’s not some self-help book with a “you can do it” message. Otherwise, I’d expect it to be valuable for people interested in improving how they approach side hustles.

Thank you for sharing. I'm now interested in reading the book. Who's the author?

I use a Remarkable and must say it's quite good. Besides the obvious note-taking use, I load PDFs on it to read and annotate. Writing feels quite natural and the e-ink screen is better than a tablet to read. Would like to have backlight as well to read at night, like some Kindles do.

White nights is short and good. Out of all the books you mentioned, I liked Brothers Karamazov the least.

On a different note, I wonder how problematic it’d be for a post to still be visible while consensus is reached. Or, the other way around, how much a post can wait to be posted until consensus on it is reached.

Nice. Not sure I like the reputation approach, though. It might lead to a small group of people controlling what can be said if the reputation distribution is not right

Maybe people here can easily afford books? Might not be a bad idea to donate to people who can't.

My buying rate exceeds my reading capacity by far. I could probably spend a year without buying new ones, but that’s probably not going to happen.
