Imo the real metaverse is that our individual existence now extends beyond our physical body, but manifests in many virtual/simulated dimensions simultaneously, which intersect to create many other emergent properties that transcend the material world. 

We now live many lives at once, and that creates a more "meta" world—a reality that exists within multiple layers of abstraction, defined by increasing complexity. Individually, we are both more interdependent and isolated than ever before.
