IMO - I’ve always leaned towards consistency over grabbing new/exclusive names. I think it makes the UX for your followers/friends smoother when moving across apps. I’ve done a number of past brand UX audits for Fortune 100 companies and consistently found differing usernames across apps to be a user pain point.

Mine is from the early 1990's when the first public ISP in the Netherlands started: hacktic.nl, later xs4all.nl. Even then all variations of "erik" even with the first letter of my last name were already taken. It sucks to spell this one though.
