Anything by Adrian Tchaikovsky. "Children of Time" (scifi) is a great entry point. It does have spiders in it. If that's a deal breaker then "Alien Clay" by him is also a fun quick read.

Some ppl are freaked out by the mere mention of spiders. Think you will enjoy it. He’s got a lot of new ideas in his books.
