I read Handmaids Tale in an honors English class freshman year of college. 

I didn’t read 1984 until a few years ago.

I re-read The Handmaids Tale recently.

I recommend both.

Interesting—I read 1984 and Animal Farm in 9th grade. (And Dale Carnegie How to Win Friends and Influence People — yeah he’s was a unique teacher) but never had the Handmaids Tale as assigned reading.
