Today's Success Story - Leah Chase, often called the "Queen of Creole Cuisine," was a pioneering African American chef who broke through racial and gender barriers in the culinary world. Born in 1923 in New Orleans, Chase grew up in a time when segregation and discrimination were rampant. Despite these challenges, she pursued her passion for cooking and eventually took over her husbandโs family restaurant, Dooky Chase's. Under her leadership, the restaurant became renowned not only for its delicious Creole dishes but also as a safe haven and meeting place for civil rights activists during the 1960s. Leaders like Martin Luther King Jr. and Thurgood Marshall would often meet at Dooky Chase's to strategize and discuss plans for the movement.
