Playdate (2023), handheld gaming device, with an exterior designed by Teenage Engineering. What sets it appart from other handhelds? The crank. As novel as this is, it seems to have a passionate community of devs and players, and as such seems to constantly sell out. https://play.date/

Anything as ambitious as this really succeeds on the strength of it documentation and community. Their dev tools are also really well thought out. They were smart to add the ability to record and share output via an emulator as well. In general, I’m a fan of companies that make it easy for their users to share and bring their creativity with minimal limitations.

Cabel Sasser, who started Panic, is a really neat guy. I went to their office years ago in Portland. Here’s a GREAT talk he did at XOXO this year. I can’t even explain what this was like to see in person. He’s the real deal. https://youtu.be/Df_K7pIsfvg?si=WoU81nSRAIat8_f8

Panic started out making Mac software, namely Transmit, a really nice SFTP client and they have been doing incredible stuff ever since.
