-John le Carré was originally considered to adapt it.
-At various points Woody Allen and Steve Martin were considered to star in it.
-Kubrick heavily considered making it a dark comedy similar to how he made Dr. Strangelove.

This was Kubrick's white whale, and the fact he got to make it after 40+ years of trying shows how fucking bad he wanted to will it into existence
