During the winter, a wood frog allows itself to freeze entirely. Its heart stops beating, blood stops flowing, and its eyes turn white as the lenses freeze. In the summer, it thaws and jumps away, good as new.

During winter, many frog species enter a state of hibernation to survive the cold temperatures. Frogs typically find a safe, insulated spot such as mud at the bottom of ponds, under logs, or in leaf litter. Their metabolic rate slows significantly, allowing them to conserve energy and endure the winter months until warmer weather returns.
