First time, second time, maybe third time, if you can afford it, absolutely it's so nice, especially for those ~10hr flights
For me, I make a goal. For our UK trip last year, I told my wife "if I can make <x> amount in next 30 days, I'll upgrade us". That way we're both pushing for me, and I made it.
For the DEGENniversary trip, I told my wife again "tell you what, if I can make <x> in the next 20 days, we'll go to Poland IN STYLE!". We're both pushing and I not only made it, I exceeded the goal. So we had some money left over for another trip later in the year.
Other benefits if you can pay for Business Class
- The miles you earn get you other trips for free
- Using a credit card FOR the airline gets you MORE points
- You can take heavier bags, board early, use Lounge, etc
I combined it also with a new credit card where you get 200k miles if you spend a certain amount in a certain time, and the one trip qualified, so for that one flight, I got like 4 other flights for free (10 flights if cheap) 3 replies
