In the biblical letter from James, it's interesting because he has all this great instruction throughout the letter, and then towards the end he says:

"But /above all/, my brothers, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or by any other oath, but let your “yes” be yes and your “no” be no, so that you may not fall under condemnation."

Crazy that he places this "above all." That's how important it was.

In ancient times, the only thing a man had was his word and honor, and when he lost either of these, death was preferable. Today, incoherence reigns, and most people say one thing and do the opposite.
