Crypto industry lost $572.7m to hacks and scams in Q2. In the second quarter of 2024, a total of $572.7 million in crypto was lost across 72 incidents due to hacks and scams. Centralized finance platforms were the primary targets of these breaches. These losses marks a 70.3% increase from the $336.3 million lost in Q1 and a staggering 112% rise compared to Q2 2023 when $265.5 million was stolen, according to a recent report from Immunefi, a Web3 bug bounty and security services platform. Over $900 million has been lost to these illicit activities year-to-date, a 24% increase from the same period last year.

Report: Coinbase loses second place in global top ranking American crypto exchange Coinbase appears to be losing traction in global trading volume amid fierce competition sparked by the launch of spot Bitcoin ETFs in the U.S. Crypto exchange Coinbase is no longer the second largest brand in terms of global trading volume, according to data compiled by blockchain analytics firm Kaiko. Since October 2023, Coinbase has seen its market share drop from 11% to 8% while rival Bybit now accounts for about 16% of global trading volume.

Metallicaโ€™s X account hacked to promote Solana token, Sahil Arora blamed. Heavy metal band Metallica became the latest victim of a cryptocurrency scam, and the community is pointing fingers at the infamous scammer Sahil Arora. On June 26, the X account of the rock band started posting about a Solana token with the ticker METAL. Over a span of 30 minutes, the attacker created several posts claiming that the token was launched in partnership with the ticketing marketplace Ticketmaster. The scammers then went on to make bogus claims to drive up the price of the Solana token.

Stablecoin issuer Tether has announced the launch of a new asset class backed by Tether Gold in a bid to enhance value consistency and stability. Tether is expanding its list of stablecoins with a new asset class aimed at enhancing stability in the digital economy by combining the attributes of a stable unit of account with the security of gold. In a blog announcement on Jun 17, Tether said the new token called โ€œAlloyโ€ is backed by Tether Gold (XAUโ‚ฎ), a token that provides ownership of real physical gold.
