The JDRF-funded 2020 study, “Estimated Lifetime Economic Burden of Type 1 Diabetes,” found a 9-year discrepancy in life expectancy of Americans between those with type-1 diabetes and those without, and that the approximate lifetime cost of being type-1 per person was $500,000 USD.

Living with diabetes in Canada is not much different, with Diabetes Canada's "Diabetes-Related Out-of-Pocket Costs 2022 report" finding that out-of-pocket annual costs can be over $18,000 annually depending on what part of the country you reside in.
